Curriculum Spotlight: Spanish

At Thatto Heath Community Primary School, we are proud to offer Spanish as part of our Modern Foreign Languages (MFL) curriculum. Led by Miss N. Jones and Mrs. J. Gibney, our Spanish lessons help pupils not only develop language skills but also immerse them in the culture and traditions of Spanish-speaking countries.

According to the National Curriculum (NC), learning a foreign language is an important part of a well-rounded education. It encourages the development of communication skills, boosts cognitive abilities  and fosters an appreciation for cultural diversity. Studying a language opens up a world of opportunities for our pupils, helping them gain confidence in speaking, listening, reading and writing in a new language.

At Thatto Heath, we start introducing Spanish in the Infants, where children learn through fun songs, rhymes, and interactive activities. These early experiences lay a strong foundation for language learning, and our pupils enjoy participating in activities that help them engage with the language in a playful, enjoyable way.

Our Spanish curriculum also includes a focus on cultural exploration, with children discovering Spanish festivals, customs, and traditions. We celebrate this rich culture through events like our Whole-School Spanish Week.

As a feeder school for Sutton Academy, where Spanish continues as a core subject, our pupils are well-prepared to transition smoothly into secondary school, continuing their journey in the language.
