LCQM Gold Award

At Thatto Heath CP School we have achieved the Liverpool Counts Quality Mark Gold Award.

This is a project which focuses on ‘numeracy for life’ skills and aims to demonstrate how highly we value the importance of mathematics and numeracy.  It’s main aim is to tackle the negative attitudes towards Mathematics which are prevalent in many areas of our society.

As a result we aim to :

  • Create a positive ethos and a ‘can-do’ ethos about Mathematics across the school
  • ensure that all our children are given the opportunity to develop their basic numeracy skills
  • Share and celebrate an enjoyment of Mathematics
  • Raise the profile of Mathematics across the school including it’s use in other subjects
  • enable our pupils to have the knowledge and confidence to use and apply these skills in many different real-life situations and within other subjects
  • Support adults in our school community to encourage the children to make connections in their Mathematics lessons to real-life contexts and with other areas of the curriculum
  • Understand the importance of Mathematics as a life skill and the role it plays in future life choices

We need your help to challenge these views and promote a culture where we understand the need for good numeracy skills and mathematics qualifications. We want to ensure our children know how important these are for their social, financial, health and employment aspects, both now and in the future.

In school, we will all be working hard to encourage pupils to make connections in their Maths lessons to real-life contexts and within other areas of their school experiences.

Watch this space to see the activities we will be taking part in! We are hoping parents, carers and the wider community will join us and get involved!

In the meantime, have a look at this website to see how you can teach your child all about Maths through stories.

Send your photos into school of you and your child sharing maths through stories at home!

Maths Ambassadors

Meet our Key Stage 2 Maths Ambassadors. These children meet regularly with the Maths Team to discuss how they can raise the profile of maths across the school and promote maths within their classes.

Recently they have taken charge of creating outdoor maths boxes so their classmates can enjoy the fun games and puzzles at lunchtimes.

What can you do to help?

  • Challenge ANYONE that you hear making negative comments about maths
  • Be aware of what you say about maths, especially around children.
  • Any time you hear celebrities in the media saying that they ‘can’t do maths’, or making negative comments about maths, discuss it with your children.
  • Share your own enjoyment of maths and highlight when you have used it in everyday life.
  • Dispel the myth that there is a maths gene and that only a few people can be good at maths
